Learning a New Financial System: My Hero’s Journey. What’s Yours?

Learning to manage money, build confidence and trust ourselves financially is a journey in itself, and mine began when I moved from Colombia to Australia and had to learn a completely new financial system. The truth is that financial transformation doesn’t only happen when you move countries. Many people grow up without financial education and navigating money becomes its own journey.

Those first few months in Australia were full of uncertainty. Those moments in life when everything feels unfamiliar, when we’re pushed out of our comfort zone and asked to grow, become an invitation into a new version of ourselves, a version we often only understand later.

This is the essence of the hero’s journey, a concept introduced by Joseph Campbell. It’s the idea that throughout our lives, we go through cycles of departure, initiation, and return. We leave what we know, face challenges that test us and eventually come back transformed as a different version of ourselves.

Moving across the world to Australia wasn’t just about the distance, it was about stepping into adulthood in every sense, and this became one of my biggest hero’s journeys. I was studying English and trying to understand a completely new financial system, which felt like learning an additional language.

Money is one of those areas where hero’s journeys often show up. It affects our sense of safety, identity, self-trust and self-esteem. However, you don’t need to move across the world to experience a money-related hero’s journey. Many people grow up without financial education, without guidance, or without healthy conversations about money. Even when we stay in our home country, we often find ourselves navigating systems we were never taught to understand. Learning to manage money, build confidence and trust ourselves financially is a journey in itself, one that can feel just as overwhelming, transformative, and empowering.

The most valuable lesson from this hero’s journey is that when we take ownership of our story, we can create space for something new, something aligned with our purpose.

Money coaching is one of the tools that helps with this. It supports you as you move forward in your money life from a place of clarity, confidence, and alignment. It’s not just about doing more or budgeting harder. It’s about understanding yourself, your patterns, and your emotional relationship with money.
